Banbury Overview
Banbury is an important trade center on the Cherwell River in Oxfordshire, England. It has a population of 42,000 people. Its importance in terms of market, commerce and retail services is significant, for it is the biggest settlement in a predominantly rural area. Some people casually refer to the area Banburyshire. The town lies on the boundary of Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire.
Banbury's most important industries and suppliers of income to the citizens (apart from tourism) are: manufacturing car components, aluminum processing, electrical goods, and food production.
The town was founded by the Romans, and originally called Banesberie. The fastest and most significant development took place in the Anglo-Saxon period, with a conspicuous Danish influence. The Medieval economic progress of the city (and region) was based on wool. Due to its position in the heart of England, Banbury has always been an important transport crossroads and hub.
Banbury Castle was one of the symbols and best-known landmarks here, constructed in 1135 by Lincoln bishops. It was besieged several times in its history, and was unfortunately demolished after the Civil War.
The finishing of the Oxford Canal in 1790 greatly fostered the town's development. Such a role was also played by the construction of the railway. Finally, the building of the M40 motorway, which allows much faster access to London, attracted many commuters and the city continued to grow steadily.
In the past, Banbury had many crosses, which were destroyed by the Puritans in the 17th Century. 250 years had to pass before a cross was once again erected within the town (as a commemoration of Queen Victoria's wedding).
The citizens of Banbury know how to entertain themselves. There are regular Live Music Nights, Craft Fairs, dancing events, and more. The various clubs and societies will give you a taste of the typical British spirit and traditions. The most famous local food is the Brandy cake - you should try it at least once!
Apart from the cultural life, historical monuments and various forms of entertainment, would you believe that there are 95 pubs within a radius of 8 km in the town center? This face alone should convince you that you must pay a visit to Banbury!
