Travel guide to Chester

Situated in the Northwest of England, Chester is the capital of the Cheshire County. Boasting of more than 2000 years of history, it is one of the most fascinating walled towns in England, having preserved most of its historical heritage. Back in Roman times, when Chester was first founded, it was known as Deva and quickly spread on the banks of the river Dee. Later on, when the city was ruled by the Anglo-Saxons, a religious institution was first built on the site where the impressive Chester Cathedral stands now. The cathedral itself dates from the times after the Norman Conquest. The Normans started the construction of the beautiful building as well as the Chester Castle.

The town center is of predominantly Victorian style buildings with narrow streets and plenty of museums preserving the historic memory of the place and the people. The biggest amphitheatre in England has been recently reconstructed and archeological excavations are in course. Downtown or along the medieval quarters, Chester offers delightful promenades back to the past on the magic carpet of time.

Romantic and mysterious, the city has also gained much of a contemporary and lively vision. It has its famous Rows of shopping galleries, which are dated back to medieval times. It is heavily populated and boasts of large shopping areas and modern business centers, as finance services is one of the major branches of local economy. Entertainment is top class. Cheerful pubs of modern, traditional and even medieval charm invite you for a beer with friends. Nightclubs and discos are also excellent. A fascinating experience is the annual edition of Chester Music Festival, as well as the Chester Midsummer Watch Parade, among the myriad of events regularly held in the town. The city is not big, but is quite pleasing and entertaining, with old-time mysteries and unique ancient charm. And as every settlement in Britain, it has its football club - Chester City FC.
