About Ipswich
Located in Suffolk on the river Orwell, Ipswich is a town inhabited by some 140,000 people. The city was founded by Saxon settlers who wanted to transform the village into a significant port of the North Sea. Thanks to its convenient location near the sea and the main trade route of the region, the city of Gippeswick (the original name) enjoyed a period of intense trade with the rest of the continent. Nevertheless, international fame didn't hit the city until Geoffrey Chaucer satirised Ipswich's merchants in The Canterbury Tales. Apart from Chaucer, the list of other remarkable British artists associated with the city include Andrew Constable and Thomas Gainsborough, who lived and worked in Ipswich most of their lives. Interestingly enough, Charles Dickens also stayed here while working on one of his books. The novelist became so enchanted with Ipswich's unique appeal that he used the city as a setting for some of the scenes in his famous novel The Pickwick Papers. Today, Ipswich remains a major tourist destination of the region, offering such attractions as the Ipswich Museum, the Tolly Cobbold Victorian brewery, the all-glass Willis Building and the Christchurch Mansion Art Gallery.
