About Newcastle
Newcastle upon Tyne, or as it is commonly called Newcastle, is the 20th most populated city in England. The town is located in the midst of beautiful surroundings and charming villages on the north bank of the Tyne River. An idea was discussed to unite the city with its surrounding smaller boroughs. The result would be the second largest city in the UK.
Newcastle has got its name since 1080. It was founded by Hadrian, the Roman Emperor, famous for the wall he built throughout almost all the lands of the Empire. In fact the remains of the Wall of Hadrian can still be seen in Newcastle, which at that time was named Pons Aelius. After the Romans lost the city it was ruled by the Anglo-Saxons as part of the Northumbria Kingdom.
